Host & Founder: Shaniece M. Wise – Business Expansion Coach & Strategist

Title: The Day I Changed My Life

In today’s episode I am interviewing Monica Rivera who is a proud Latina from The Bronx. Monica left Corporate America after a successful 15-year career in marketing, and is now the proud owner of the podcast, “You Wanna Do What?” and a Personal Development Coach.

As Monica shares her story, we learn that she lost all passion in her marketing career. It became evident while sitting in a job interview during yet another reorganization that this was no longer the life for her.  After transitioning through reorganization after reorganization she soon found herself further and further away from what she really wanted to be doing. “When you work for someone else you lose all control over your career.”

The turning point in her life came when she realized that doors were not opening for her. She was in the middle of a bad relationship and being out of sorts in her personal life was spilling over into her professional life. Having a Type-A Personality, Monica always had detailed plans for the years of her life, but at this time, she could not tell you the plans for the upcoming months. She knew that she had to make a change, and this is when her podcast was born.

Monica shares,

“My advice for anyone finding themselves in this situation is to simply start,
and let the momentum carry you. I purchased my first mic in 2013 but did not open it until 2017.  After I stepped out on faith, the doors started to open for me. It felt as if God was saying to just trust Him.”

Currently, Monica offers two services. She is a Personal Development
Coach, as well as assists others in launching their own podcast. Through her coaching, she teaches that the only way to move forward is to go through it. In her podcast training, she teaches others how to use their own podcast to find their voice.

Monica has several loves in her life, including traveling, reading, and family. Her love of travel has resulted in visiting 48 of the 50 states, and several locations abroad.

“I love the energy of the DC area and go there as often as I can.”

On the flip side, being a native New Yorker, she also charges her creativity by visiting rural locations like state parks. Of all of the places where she has been, Banff Canada, is her favorite. Located in Alberta, Calgary, Canada,
Banff is a resort town located at the base of Mt. Cascade. While there she has met people from all over the world. Several came to visit, and eventually relocated there.

Another love is reading. Being self-employed has afforded her the ability to spend a lot of time reading. Her favorite book is “The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin. She is currently reading “Minority Leader: How to Lead from the Outside and Make Real Change” by Stacy Abrams.

I love this book because not only does she talk about her journey, but she shares the worksheets that she created for herself that helped her to map out her journey.”

Having a love for podcasts before podcasts were popular, her favorite podcast was, The Bill Simmons Podcast.

We could not be more opposite but listening to his podcast is like being among friends. It is very relational.”

Another podcaster she enjoys is Paula Pant. Her podcast is entitled “Afford Anything”.  Her basic premise is although you cannot afford everything, you can afford anything. You cannot be what you cannot see.

Monica is currently single. “I have learned that before I get involved in another relationship, it is going to have to be a value-add arrangement. I do have two wonderful nieces, and a love for photography. My hobby has landed me the title of being the family photographer.

Monica has used podcasting to change her life, and today she is sharing 3 tips with us on how to change your life as well.

1.       Any day can be the day that you change your life. Do not wait
until Monday, the first of the month, or the first of the year. Do not
give yourself space to talk yourself out of it.

1.       Stay curious to the things that light you up on the inside.

2.       Do not let anyone dim your light. It is up to you to make your
own light shine.

Monica is giving away, 5 Free 30-minute podcasting discovery sessions – launching, growing or monetizing your podcast.
